GLOBE
MANUAL
PACE - not too slow as it the information is in the manual, and to keep peoples attention
ORDER - people liked (Femke and Marijke) how it started with the national anthem, as every country has one meaning expats immediately recognize what it is, and represents the identity of a country.
LANGUAGE - Having the original language gives a unique and art house film feel. It is also a choice as language is part of a countries culture.
SIZE - The size cannot be too small because it has to feel like a piece of furniture or art in the living room. The first prototype was too small and without a stand, which is something we do want to have to represent a grand globe. The size we now went for is the size of a football with a diameter of 28 cm because the users have to also be able to hold it to project it where they want.
MATERIAL - Wood is both sustainable and easy to work with and strong, plus lazer cutter can make precise outlines and pieces.
The choice to make a manual occurred due to user testing, as Marijke said that the film itself might be nicer without text and also as a background art piece, when in combination with a manual the function to inform expats is achieved.
COLOR PALETTE - We chose orange as it is the color that most represents the Netherlands, having the thought of possibly being part of a collection where this is the Netherlands version and another country would have another color palette. We also chose a very small color palette of just 3 colors as repetition of the color orange makes the layout and style recognizable, a sort of branding.
STYLE AND TYPOGRAPHY - We chose for Georgia as a font, as it has a sense of reliability to it. A serious font makes you trust the source a bit more. The style is very simple and repeats itself on every page, but then variations in photos, sizes and highlighted locations.
